Introduction:
At Powercomm, we believe in fostering young talent and providing them with the tools and experience needed to succeed in the fast-paced engineering world. Recently, we had the opportunity to chat with Tom, a participant in our Engineering Summer Internship Programme. He shared insights on his journey, experiences, and what future interns can expect from the programme.
A Little About Tom:
Tom is a third-year Electrical Engineering student at TU Dublin, always had a passion for numbers, computers, and design. Initially, he leaned toward the design side of engineering, but after joining Powercomm’s Internship Programme, Tom found himself exploring the world of commissioning.
Inside the Internship:
Tom was excited about the real-world exposure they gained in the programme. From shadowing experienced engineers to working on-site, he learned about commissioning, testing, and the day-to-day operations of an engineering company.
He shared that one of the most valuable parts of their experience was getting hands-on experience with electrical tests like CT and VT, as well as writing detailed reports. "I didn't know the extent of commissioning before, but now I find it fascinating. The long hours can be tough, but the hands-on work is incredibly rewarding," he said.
The Importance of Work Experience:
One aspect that stood out during the interview was the value of site visits. Tom expressed a desire for more opportunities to visit different work sites. "The more you can see firsthand, the more you learn. Shadowing engineers on-site was the best part of the programme for me," Tom shared.
Looking Ahead: Advice for Future Graduates
When asked for advice, Tom emphasised the importance of having strong math skills. "Make sure your math is up to scratch, especially higher-level math. It comes in handy during technical aspects of the work."
He also encouraged students interested in engineering to take every opportunity for hands-on experience. “Don’t just stick to the books. Get as much hands-on experience as possible. It’ll help you understand the practical side of engineering."
Conclusion:
At Powercomm, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of engineers. Our Internships and Graduate Programme are designed to provide real-world experience and mentorship to help students like Tom bridge the gap between academic learning and industry practice.
If you’re an aspiring engineer, our Graduate Programme might be the perfect next step for you. Stay tuned for more details on how to apply and become a part of our team!
