Day in the Life: James Broderick
Commissioning Engineer
Started as a Graduate Engineer at Powercomm Group
What does a typical day look like?
No two days are the same, which is one of the things I enjoy most about the role. My work involves commissioning electrical systems.
Each morning starts with planning and prioritising. I focus on the big tasks first and then fit everything else around them. Being thorough is critical — deadlines are important, but safety and accuracy always come first.
A huge part of my role is ensuring the protection system will operate correctly and accurately.
What do you enjoy most about the role?
The problem-solving aspect, without a doubt. You’re faced with complex problems every day, and you have to really think things through. It’s challenging but very rewarding. You’re always learning, you never know everything in this job.
Why Powercomm Group?
Powercomm isn’t a big, faceless company — you know everyone by name. James Cafferty is only a phone call away, and he always makes time for staff.
There’s no rat race here. Everyone supports each other and is willing to explain things. When I asked colleagues what I should study or focus on, they shared their experience and gave genuine advice. People want the best for each other.
What are the biggest challenges?
There can be pressure from tight timeframes.
Every project is different. Protection relays, system designs, and technical requirements vary constantly, so you have to think on your feet and adapt quickly.
What do you do outside of work?
I spend time outdoors — farming, walking, and being with my family. When you’re mentally tired, it hits differently, so getting fresh air really helps clear my head.
